Description:

Shrubs or trees, 4-20 m tall; bark brown. Leaves papery, elliptic or elliptic-oblong, 6-12 cm long and 2-5 cm long, apex acute or rounded and emarginated, base broadly cuneate, brown when dry, glabrous; petiole 1-2 cm long, narrowly winged. Inflorescence a dichasium, arising from leaf axils near branch apex, long peduncled; flowers white, ca. 6 mm in diam.; sepals 5, base connate, ovate-oblong, ca. 3 mm long; petals 5, broadly orbicular, 2.5 times as long as sepals; stamens 10, exserted, up to 2 cm long. Capsules ovoid-ellipsoid, 2-3 cm long, 1 cm wide, 5-valved; seeds ellipsoid, 8-10 mm long, with a 1-1.5 cm long wing on one end.

Distribution:

Cape D'Aguilar, Happy Valley, Wong Nai Chung, Aberdeen, Repulse Bay, Ma On Shan. Areas S of Changjiang River. Vietnam.

Habitat and Ecology:

In thickets or thin forests. Flowering: May-June; fruiting: June-Oct.

Although this species has been recorded in the "China Plant Red Data Book", it can be found in various localities in Hong Kong and the populations are not under any particular threat.
