Description:

Evergreen trees, bark green. Leaves aggregated on upper portion of branchlets; leaf blade oblong-oblanceolate or oblong-elliptic, 18-25 cm long and 5-8 cm wide, apex acute, base cuneate, lateral nerves 24-30 on each side, veinlet numerous, alveolate abaxially. Racemes 1-3-flowered, terminal on branchlets, 5-12 cm long. Perianth lobes 6 in two whorles, glabrous, outer ones smaller, inner ones oblong-elliptic, 7 mm long. Fertile stamens 9, 4.2-4.4 mm long; pistil elliptic, glabrous. Fruit globose, 2.5 cm in diam.; pedicel red in fruiting time.

Distribution:

Tai Mo Shan, Kadoorie Farm, Mount Parker. Guangdong, Guangxi.

Habitat and Ecology:

In forest of mountain slopes or in valleys.

A rare species, previously described as Persea kadooriei to commemorate Mr. L. Kadoorie and later synonymized underM. wangchiana. In Hong Kong, most of the localities of its occurrence are in Country Parks and Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden under protection. Ex-situ conservation measures could be adopted. Living specimens are cultivated in the Shing Mun Arboretum.
